so I only hunted a phantom (believing it would be one strong weapon). a google search showed that this serpent staff is total crap anyways. Maybe it needs the real old shit to produce shit? Anyways. Maybe my system/DOSBox is too "good", so less errors are produced? Back at the time I achieved that (bug), I had Win95 with real DOS. Needless to say, I failed to kill him, no matter which tricks I tried. Purpose was to kill Bacatta in the first jungle and get his serpent staff (I achieved that once). The third part is fun as well, but has some balancing issues (like magic being mostly useless), a somewhat unlikable protagonist and is even buggier than the 2nd part. It does have flaws, though, and I can see how someone coming from the first game could be massively disappointed. I really like LoL II, because I think it does a pretty good job at being an adventure-rpg that's really fun to explore and experiment in, mainly because there are no item descriptions at all. The former you can cancel with a spell you get quite early in the game, the latter you mostly can't because they are necessary in order to advance or find secrets. That's because if I recall correctly there are 2 types of transformations: random, timed ones and ones triggered by certain locations. There are some points where the transformations can be bothersome, but as far as I can remember when you actually need a specific form to advance, then the required transformation will trigger. In fact it's a great sense of accomplishment when you're finally able to shapeshift into the lizard and back into human form (nobody in their sane mind would want to transform into the monster, however). I replayed it a few years ago, for the first time since release, and was actually surprised, it was a lot better than I had remembered.Ĭlick to expand. But you can, only later in the game. It's a pretty good game despite the flaws. A lot of puzzles have multiple ways to solve them, depending on what items you have and/or which path you're on, with sometimes very different rewards depending on what you do. Areas are sometimes huge with a LOT to do, my favourites are the Ruins, Cemetary, Temple and City, lots of good puzzles there. But level and puzzle designs are great, the FMV is cheesy as hell but has some charm, there's a LOT of optional content hidden around, quite a bit of C&C as outlined below, giving you two pretty different paths through the game (the usual Good and Evil playthroughs, but things really do change quite a bit), a simple but fun crafting system. It's more on the action side of the ARPG, combat is very clickety, controls are awkward, and it carries over the annoyance of not really knowing what any of the items are actually supposed to do (coupled with a pretty shitty interface, in some aspects). There's a lot of things that are wrong with LOL2, including how much it departs from LOL1. It has more C&C than most other CRPGs that claim to have it actually. Lots of smaller things change in the Citadel, the City and the endgame too, including of course the ending. Enough to significantly change how the second half of the game plays out (the Savage Jungle is VERY different) and being Evil gets you a shortcut to skip a huuuuuuuuge part of the Temple.
